Coronavirus, the greatest test for innovation

TTS Italia: “Let’s start working immediately for the maximum diffusion of technology and ITS in the post-crisis"
Coronavirus will be the litmus test for digital, innovation and technology in Italy. This unexpected and extremely difficult situation for the whole world has affected an Italy that within a few days had to draw on a series of skills that have put institutions, businesses and individual citizens in front of the possibilities offered by the technological leap.
In a weekend, smart working has become mandatory in the public administration and for many private companies, highway traffic has fallen by 56%, the transport of people by rail and road has drastically decreased, up to -90% in cities hardest hit, like Milan for example. Goods logistics managed the impact admirably, allowing the supply of drugs, food and other basic necessities throughout the country. But, after the initial shock, the limits of the system appeared: 11 million people in our country live without an Internet connection, the corporate networks have been saturated, unprepared to cope with a growing demand for traffic. "Italy is serving years of neglect in investments for technology and innovation - comments Olga Landolfi, Secretary General of TTS Italia - As an Association we will work so that in the post-crisis reconstruction phase all necessary measures are taken to accelerate the contribution of innovation and technology in mobility.
Already before this period of serious discomfort, TTS Italia had started many initiatives to support the spread of intangible infrastructures which, as we have been able to test even in these days, help in crisis situations, but they can represent an extraordinary driving force of growth in the reconstruction phase to create a resilient system and increasingly qualified employment".
"We should not forget in particular at a time like this - intervenes Rossella Panero, President of TTS Italia - the great help that ITS can give in terms of the country's competitiveness. We have said on more than one occasion and it is worth repeating even now that the revitalization of Italy and the economy must also pass from the full implementation of smart mobility.
TTS Italia will work to ensure that all of this is taken into account in the reconstruction phase by completing the initiatives already started such as our working groups on logistics and MaaS, but also by adhering to projects aimed at improving the post-Covid 19 recovery such as Logistics Think Tank ".
Actually, TTS Italia is one of the associations that joined the first Think Tank of Logistics, officially launched in these days, coordinated by the Freight Leaders Council and supported by Ebilog (Bilateral Body of the sector) with the aim of comparing the best resources of the transport and logistics, both in scientific and business terms, in order to examine and constructively face the challenges facing logistics.
"The pressing sequence of events linked to the evolution of Covid 19 - explains the President of the Freight Leaders Council, Massimo Marciani - has convinced us of the need to accelerate the confrontation within the sector to prepare for reconstruction. We need to study the emergency and contingent actions and prepare an action plan for the aftermath. What will institutions, companies and the country system have to do to give a structural sense to all the sacrifices we are facing now? I believe that the first step must be the sburocratization: we must take advantage of the dialogue that has opened up between the government and associations on the Coronavirus as an exceptional opportunity to remove useless laces and make our system simpler, more immediate and direct. The second is to use any funding that the government should make available for a Marshall digitization plan. We must go back to being the main protagonists of innovation in logistics ".
Logistics and the sprint towards digital and innovation is at the heart of the Logistics working group launched by TTS Italia at the end of last year. Even this activity, which did not stop during the emergency, continuing its work online, is now evaluating the possibilities of the post-crisis. "We are receiving the contributions of the various associations and companies involved - says Clara Ricozzi, as Group coordinator - Among these, I would like to point out an excellent contribution to the safe parking areas which currently are only two in Italy and which represent a great support to the increase in the competitiveness of road freight transport ".
Among the other open dossiers, there is the study of ways to reduce waiting times and storage of goods at interchange hubs such as ports, freight villages, airports also through the digitization of documents, the promotion of intermodality and comodality road-rail-sea, through the use of ITS systems, designed to create telematic platforms, at the logistic nodes, which allow to simplify and speed up operational and administrative processes. The works also focus on improving the logistics chain relating to the port sector, through the dissemination of blockchain technology for exchanges of information and transactions in real time. Finally, great attention also to city logistics, with the development of innovative technological systems to optimize the process of delivery of goods (route planning, booking of loading and unloading areas, monitoring and tracking of vehicles and loads, limitation of dwell times). Finally, the working group on MaaS (Mobility as a Service), started end of January and coordinated by 5T, will also be able to make a great contribution to the post-crisis recovery.
The study of this group includes customized user-friendly mobility solutions, the possibility of purchasing ad hoc mobility service packages and the experimentation of remote payment methods. Certainly useful systems in a moment of slow and gradual return to normality, where however prevention measures will continue to be important elements for the good of the community.

Mobility as an Inclusive Service. DIGNITY becomes an exceptional opportunity to break the digital barriers for vulnerable people

Since the middle of the last century, the world has lived a digital revolution that has affected all the areas of the society. Urban transport is not an exception, new services and new players have appeared building up new mobility markets. Some years ago, the use of paper tickets was really a common way to access to the transport services, nowadays they may belong to antique collectors as paper was displaced by digital tickets. Nonetheless, the benefits of this revolution have not arrived at all the society levels, even more, in some cases it has increased the digital gap between different classes of users. For instance, a blind person may find more complicated paying the bus using an account-based method rather than paying directly to the bus drivers with the assistance they may give. But the digital wheel cannot be stopped, and it becomes a duty for transport services providers to adapt the systems and connect all users, even those who the modernity strives to leave aside.
The Project DIGNITY, financed by the European Commission, has taken these issues seriously and will explore the digital transport ecosystem in three different phases: framing and bridging the digital gap, finally the impact assessment of the solutions proposed. Italy is represented in this interesting project by the city of Ancona, one of the most important Italian hubs in the Adriatic Sea. In the last years the city has turned to an inclusive development, either for its elderly population as for disabled people and immigrants, providing multiple social services.
myCicero, the company partner in this project, has taken into consideration this development and has decided to support it thanks to its expertise and hundreds running projects on mobility and MaaS (Mobility-as-a-Service). myCicero, along with Conerobus, the local bus company and the municipality of Ancona, plans to boost the inclusive development, upgrading the current app for public transport. It will be improved with new features that are focused on breaking the actual digital barriers, involving all the users who may see in the App an ally for their daily activities.
The company myCicero will mainly work on two actions; the first one can be summarized as follows: have you ever closed yours eyes and travelled from home to work? Have you ever tried to get on a bus not lifting your legs up? If you have ever done that at least once in your life you will figure out that the number of barriers along the way are shocking, this is the daily life of visually impaired and mobility disabled people. For this first, the project will include the following functionalities in the current app: Multimodal trip planning: the lack of equipment for aiding disabled people either at bus stops as inside the buses is a real fact.
To deal with this, the project is providing a simple but powerful new component to the travel solution indicating the accessibility (or not) of vehicles and bus stops. Such component allows the users to know if the next bus or bus stop is suitable for their needs. Beacons communication: these small devices have revolutionized the communication industry, allowing a perfect wireless communication.
These and other features are perfectly fitting in DIGNITY project, being incorporated either at the bus stops and inside the buses. Their main function will be to collect information about the next bus stop or the next bus arriving. By transmitting this information through a push notification via APP, this notification may be read aloud to the user without the need of any interaction with the smartphone. Integrated ticketing for public transport and single payment: thinking that it is already really complicated to get a ticket just for a single transport in weak physical conditions, you can easily imagine repeating the operation as many times as the number of transport modes you need. It becomes a struggle and it could end by turning the trip into a tiring operation when not even the journey has begun.
The Italian pilot partner plans to merge different operators into a single payment avoiding the effort and making simpler the trip planning. APP with voice access: smartphones are a magnificent ally in people daily life. In this sense, current technology trends point to a higher level of human-machine interaction, not only pressing buttons and waiting for answers, but talking and listening. The idea is to include this feature, enabling the current APP to receive voice commands and give answers related to, for example, the arrival time of a specific bus.
The second action is addressed to other groups of vulnerable-to-exclusion users: low-income users and migrants. Understanding that the needs of these groups are not necessarily linked to physical disabilities, the Italian pilot plans the definition of good advices for new business schema and feasibility assessments and also new measures to include the largest communities and their challenge in integration in public transport, all under a large and extended research whose outcomes will be the backbone of this strategy line to be adopted at local level.
Both action lines have been planned along a strong cooperation from Conerobus and the municipality of Ancona, providing direct assistance to vulnerable users, with training and protocols to bus drivers and a close relation with sensitive people associations, listen their demands and creating agreements that seek to satisfy their needs, providing safe access to public transport and making their life barrierless.

INRIX publishes the Global Traffic Scorecard 2019
INRIX, TTS Italia ordinary member, has recently released the Global Traffic Scorecard 2019. The INRIX Global Traffic Scorecard is an in-depth congestion and mobility study, delivering a data-rich evaluation of urban travel, traffic health and vibrancy on an unprecedented scale. The 2019 Scorecard builds upon the methodology adopted in 2018, with the goal to provide a more granular and holistic analysis of mobility within the world’s most congested cities.
New additions to the 2019 Scorecard include commute mode (bicycle and public transport) travel time comparisons, incident congestion impacts, and the incorporation of multiple commutes within each metro. Combined with drive-time maps and last-mile speeds, these advanced metrics provide a unique basis for cross-national commuting comparisons and analysis.
The most noticeable change to the 2019 Traffic Scorecard is the refinement of commute destinations within each urban area. Previously, commute times were calculated by looking exclusively at the time it takes to get to and from the downtown core from surrounding commuter neighborhoods. However, many cities have multiple major employment centers. To rectify this shortcoming, the 2019 Global Traffic Scorecard used anonymized observed trips to identify the most frequented routes and destinations throughout a region to create a more accurate portrayal of commuting for a region, not just to and from a downtown core. Some highlights. On average, Americans lost about 99 hours a year due to congestion, costing them nearly $88 billion in 2019, an average of $1,377 per driver.
Boston topped the list as most congested city in America with drivers there losing more than 149 hours in traffic.  Drivers in the U.K. lost an average of 115 hours a year due to congestion, costing £6.9 billion in 2019, an average of £894 per driver. London (149 hours per driver) and Belfast (112 hours per driver) ranked as the worst cities in the United Kingdom (U.K.) for time lost due to congestion.
Munich (87 hours), Berlin (66 hours) and Dusseldorf (50 hours) top the list of German cities with the most time lost due to congestion. When ranking by hours lost in congestion, four of the Top 10 cities are South American, three European, and two North American.
City age, density, geography and public transport are the best predictors for severe rush hour congestion. The worst cities globally to be a driver are European cities followed by Latin American cities.
