Higher Security and Reduced Fuel Consumption by Pioneering Technologies in Freight Transport with Kapsch
In a demonstration at AstaZero test site in Sweden Kapsch TrafficCom, TTS Italia ordinary member, has tested automated systems for truck platooning. Platooning denotes a vehicle convoy in which only the first vehicle is controlled by a driver. Kapsch provided the V2X equipment that enables communication between vehicles and infrastructure (V2I) and from vehicle to vehicle (V2V). Platooning involves the automated coupling of vehicles by electronic means, while first vehicle takes control. The lead vehicle is managed whilst the remaining vehicles regulate the speed to follow automatically. This requires technical precautions to ensure the convoy’s safety. It’s required that vehicles must communicate with each other and react to other environmental factors. When the first car brakes, all moving trucks must perform the braking maneuver at the very same moment. Should a car have to turn along the route, then it should have as little impact on the entire train as possible. Kapsch has recently contributed technology to a test in Sweden, where platooning was tested on site. "Platooning is an exciting second generation application of V2X that shows the potential and versatility of the technology. In the test our V2X module EVK-3300 served as a communication platform in the vehicle," tells Adam Tengblad, Head of Product Management at Kapsch TrafficCom Sweden. "It utilizes the IEEE 802.11p standard – a variant of WiFi that is adapted for ad hoc networking – to manage the sensor data and radio signals. The module is an interface in the processing of the data which is needed for automatically driving a vehicle." Advantages of the new technologies are obvious, especially for the transport industry: higher security and improved use of resources. Large transport vehicles naturally have a high air resistance and within platoons this resistance can be reduced by slipstream effects. This saves fuel and helps to make better use of road space. The vision is that only the first vehicle in the convoy is controlled by a driver, while all the others are connected to the first vehicle. This allows a simultaneous acceleration or braking, whilst the reduced distance between the vehicles is made possible by the elimination of human reaction time. A convoy can consist of an arbitrary number of vehicles, but for practical application the number of trucks will be limited to the order of around ten vehicles. Depending on the vehicle distance first test results show fuel savings of between five to twenty percent – a significant cost advantage for forwarding companies when the technology is used everywhere. Indra implements the latest integrated ticketing and management technology in Tenerife´s public bus and streetcar services
Indra, TTS Italia ordinary member, has been awarded a €9.1 M contract by Tenerife's regional government to implement the latest public transportation management technology in its urban and inter-city services. Indra will implement an Operation Assistance System (OAS) to manage a fleet of 530 buses on the island and an integrated contactless-ticketing solution for its buses and streetcar services.
The president of the Cabildo de Tenerife regional administration, Carlos Alonso, presented the project to Indra on March 20, at a ceremony attended by the mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, the island's head of transport services, Manuel Ortega, and Indra's head of Transport, José Antonio Francés, where the new equipment was displayed.
With Indra's new multimode contactless-ticketing system the card only has to be passed over a reader, replacing the current magnetic-strip ticketing system. Passengers will now be able to use a single contactless card on urban and intercity buses, streetcars and also 40 taxis on the island. This will encourage intermodality, the combined use of various transport services.
Public transportation users will also be able to use the new card to pay the dissuasive parking charges the island has put in place to reduce private vehicle use in cities. The contactless cards can be topped up in more than 300 sales outlets and charging points, using automatic machines and manual sales terminals.
Information from the central ticketing system will be collected by a cutting edge control center, enhancing the management of the service. The system includes ticket validation subsystems in buses, taxis, parking lots and streetcar stations; recharging at sales points and in automatic machines; ticket inspection using portable terminals; revenue allocation between the companies involved, TITSA (Transportes Interurbanos de Tenerife) and MTSA (Metropolitano de Tenerife); and passenger assistance services, to ensure the cards are used correctly.
The control center can follow the location of every vehicle in the fleet at all times, viewing images from their on-board cameras, managing passenger information and taking real-time decisions in response to incidents, needs for additional services and any deviations from the planned service. This is all made possible by the geographic information systems, on-board equipment and mobile communication infrastructure, using WiFi and 3G technology, included in Indra's solution.
The solution also offers reports and graphics with details of the services so they can be adjusted to actual passenger demand, improving quality and performance whilst reducing costs.
Passengers will also benefit from the improved transport management offered by new technology, through higher quality services, better information and safer transport. The system will, for example, provide information on the next stops, connections to other lines, incidents and expected arrival times, using the latest generation multimedia screens on buses and at bus stops.
The on-board video-surveillance system installed in part of the fleet, and fully integrated into the OAS, can record, broadcast and display real-time images from on-board cameras, improving safety and helping combat vandalism and violent behavior.

The consortium led by Indra completes the first phase of Coruña Smart City with the launch of the urban platform's operations
Coruña Smart City is Spain’s first project that aims to use technology to achieve full cross-disciplinary city management. This urban platform is already installed and operational in the Council's Data Processing Center (DPC) of this Galician city. This way, the temporary joint venture led by Indra, TTS Italia ordinary member, and comprised of Altia, Ilux and R as telecommunications operator, closes the project's first phase, which began in 2013.
The city's "brain" has already begun receiving data from 3 of the 14 pilots that make up the project: multichannel events, guided visits system and electronic administration. Thereby, citizens may use the first services, including mobile applications for the city's cultural and leisure calendar of events and guided visits with augmented reality, amongst others. The town council's electronic headquarters, sede.coruna.gob.es, part of the electronic administration pilot project, is also available.
All of these services are accessible through the Coruña Smart City portal, smart.coruna.es, where useful, dynamic and real-time data is displayed for the citizen. This initial catalog is completed with the Open Data portal that includes freely accessible information for all citizens to use, with over 130 data sources of diverse types. Its goal is for entrepreneurs to use this data for developing new applications and innovative services.
These applications are just a part of the smart city project, which will be completed over upcoming weeks with new services and applications while crossing data that the pilot projects contribute to offer a comprehensive vision of the city.
The Coruña Smart City platform is based on SOFIA2 (http://sofia2.com), Indra's Internet of Things (IOT) solution with cloud and big data capabilities. SOFIA2 makes it possible to integrate and share information from different systems, mobile devices and social networks in a simple manner. This is a big management center ("integration brain") that enables communication between the services and solutions of the city’s ecosystem (mobility, water, energy, environment, leisure and tourism, etc.) and provides a full overview of its activity. It also includes analysis tools to predict the city's behaviors as regards service use to adapt them in a better and more proactive way to real needs.
Since its launch, this project has garnered major recognition. For instance, it was one of the six finalists (out of 200 initiatives) in the project category of the World Smart Cities Awards 2013; recently, it received an Honorable Mention at the 2014 Public Procurement of Innovation Award ceremony from the European Commission. Additionally, it has been considered the Best Council Initiative by the association Ingenieros de Telecomunicación de Galicia and the engineering college Colexio Profesional de Enxeñaría en Informática de Galicia, and it has received an award from Fundación Dintel.

3 QUESTIONS TO MACNIL

  • Macnil is very active in the technological field in south Italy and mainly in Puglia. From the technological point of view, which are the difficulties in spreading the innovation?

In Puglia the IT field has limited dimensions, even if it is growing . It contains about 4% of the IT companies all over Italy for a total of 16.000 attendants, corresponding to about 4% of work force of the field, at national level.
Inside our territory, there are many examples of innovative companies, even if, according to the information we have from the Region, these have shown interest in not very “radical” innovations and more interest in innovations like using new products/services or methods.
The success of Macnil in this uncertain context is a consequence of the propulsive boost and of the continuous investments for the research in the IOT field , and beyond all this, it is given by the high capacity of creating a net with laboratories for research and with big national groups like Telecom Italy.

  • Macnil has recently won the prize: “OpenGeoData Italy”. Which are the points of strength of the Company and which are the main products ?

The prize above mentioned is the result of very hard work and research, with partners and college laboratories, everything having been done for one reason: to propose alternative models of mobility.
That is how “OpenGeoData Italia” choose our App InfoSmartCity(available on the AppStore), that deals with geographical and alphanumeric data, that are open in the dynamic and in the static way and other  geo-referenced data elaborated in real time.
The reason of the prize is that ” it is being recognized to the company the capacity to invest, generating App that use open data, useful because they transform the cities in places more intelligent and in better places to live in.” Besides the remote control systems for the fleet management , in this moment, thanks to Zucchetti, we are entering in a new important field with impressive numbers: the mobile advertising.
Our SMS Service Landing platform offers to many companies of all sizes, the opportunity to create personalized marketing mobile campaigns that are also low cost.

  • In which future event /occasion will be possible to meet Macnil?

After having been present at the Mobile World Congress in Barcellona, from 16 to 20 of March, we will be in Hannover at CeBIT, the most important international fair dedicated to the technology, to the software, to the digital services and to the telecommunication field.

Viasat BluTrack: to follow the goods even if the mode of transport changes

One of the objections that logistics managers raise to intermodality is the possible loss of control on the traceability of goods when changing the carrier. This may be in conflict with the protocols guaranteeing the safety of the goods that for some clients are very strict.

In the intermodal transport, different modes of road transport are involved for the first and last mile (in addition to any possible parties for the picking) and one (or more) rail carrier.

For this segment of users, the Italian company Viasat has developed a product for geolocation and remote monitoring, tailored for this market: the BluTrack.

To be used in the intermodal traffic the device must be able to work even when it is not electrically powered for a long time, not being able to rely on the generator of the truck.

Having already available in its product range all the advanced technology required to collect and transmit data for traditional Fleet Management applications, the research developed by Viasat was therefore focused on the autonomy of the device in the absence of external power.

The effort was put on improving the performance of the accumulator and of the balance between the frequency of the "active" phases of the device (in which there is energy consumption) and the functionality of the response of transport and goods tracking and monitoring.

Furthermore, Viasat has developed a model for tracking the position of the load that on the one hand grants a substantial saving of electrical power, and on the other allows the device to be active even if positioned within metal casing as the container, which normally obscures the GPS signal and makes the device itself inefficient.

Thanks to the cell-based technology, in case of weak or absent GPS signal, in automatic, the system provides the position of the vehicle, through the identification information given by the GSM cells to which it is connected. In this way, you can identify the geographical area in which the vehicle is, with a triangulation of the connected cells and a variable accuracy depending on the territorial distribution of GSM cells, in the vicinity of a few hundred meters. A radius that is in any case sufficient considering that the intermodal transport is often related to fixed locations such as terminals or the railway line.

As soon as, for example when opening the barn door, the GPS signal comes back, the device automatically sends the exact position together with the event warning (very useful intervention especially if the opening is not in compliance with the transport cycle, i.e. theft).

Different versions have been entered in the catalog, referring to totally self-sufficient solutions for up to 12 months (mainly for the transoceanic traffic of containers) or rechargeable at varying intervals according to the use (e.g., for traffic on continental routes on shuttle itineraries with the loading unit returning to the base within 15-20 days).

However, since the needs of each customer, in relation to the tracking mode of the load and the parameters that have to be monitored, can be very different, Viasat is able to adapt the performance of the BluTrack to fit customised solutions tailored to the individual customer needs, thanks to the programming of features.

Frequency of data transmission according to the status of the loading unit (in warehouse or on the road), thresholds setting for the immediate launch of alerts on critical issues related to control parameters such as temperature, humidity, collisions, break-ins and more.

In addition to containers, swap bodies and semi-trailers, BluTrack can be used to trace the goods themselves, inserted in the packaging (prevailing anti-theft feature), or to control the work equipment in construction sites.

The Viasat Design team is in contact with the customer from the early stages to identify the needs and propose offers of service able to provide the customer with the type and the quality of data needed to manage the security of transport in relation to his company organisation.

The signals sent by the BluTrack are received by the Viasat operations centres and processed at a basic level.

The customer can entrust the entire management to the Viasat operations centres or get the data transferred to an in-house system on Web-Console or opt for intermediate tailored solutions.

The data can be monitored both from the PC and from applications for Tablet and Smartphone.

Viasat is able to offer a wide range of security and assistance services, thanks to the experience and specialisation gained in over 25 years of activity. Viasat has its own infrastructure for the management of alarms and of the intervention practices related to the safety of the driver and the protection of the vehicle and of transported goods.

The Viasat Operations Centre is able to track the device and always find the vehicle or the person in need, wherever they are, thanks to the GPS signal and to the GSM/GPRS communication.

The adoption of Viasat BluTrack and of the integrated services for the Tracking & Tracing of loading units allows the carrier to obtain interesting cost savings if compared to those resulting from an internalised management, plus the ability to offer intermodal transport solutions fully and continuously monitored and not to miss a market segment that requires this feature.

Moreover, the detection and the recording of critical events related to thresholds of temperature, humidity, dynamics of impact or theft allow a much more direct management of the responsibilities of the different carriers involved or of circumstances beyond one's control, towards the customers and the Insurance Companies. Considerable savings can be achieved also in this case.

Not least, the fact that Viasat has its own telematics infrastructure and standard protocols for connectivity and interconnection between the Viasat Operations Centre, institutional Client Portals and/or of Business Services, such as the National Logistics Platform UIRNet (with over 3000 connected vehicles), CCISS, Roma Capitale and PA in general, allows to interact with systems of collaborative management of transport and be connected with the main Italian freight terminals.

The integration with the devices for the road transport of the Runtracker line and with the Viasat Fleet Management services also allows, through the same Web Console, to generate new and additional business opportunities for the companies that decide to take advantage of telematics to optimise and make the management of their fleets more efficient.

The city of Milan, the city of Messina and of Capo d’Orlando enter the Platform of the Local Authorities
In 2015, the Platform for Local Authorities, launched by TTS Italia in February 2014, keeps on growing with new important subscription: the cities of Milan, Messina and Capo d’Orlando officially entered the Platform. In anticipation of the implementation of the National ITS strategy by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, TTS Italia proposes the establishment of a Platform for Local Authorities (Regions, Provinces and Municipalities), which aims primarily to create a table of comparison between the world of the offer, a strong presence in the Association, and the demand side. The Platform will offer Local Authorities support and training services useful for the local implementation of ITS. The main aim of the Platform is to raise the awareness of local authorities on the tangible benefits that ITS can bring through measures of knowledge and information for decision-makers and technicians, operational support and training.
