FRANCO FENOGLIO, PRESIDENT OF THE INDUSTRIAL VEHICLE SECTOR OF UNRAE (ASSOCIATION OF FOREIGN CAR MAKERS OPERATING IN ITALY)

Mr. Fenoglio, heavy vehicles are making strides from the technological point of view: they are increasingly interconnected. What are the technologies currently available on a truck? Where are we now?
In the global market the rate of diffusion of connected vehicles is expected to grow rapidly. Some manufacturers of commercial vehicles have already taken steps to equip their vehicles with devices for connecting and looking to the future, it is expected that more and more manufactures will provide connected vehicles.
Connectivity offers important advantages: allows customers to monitor in real time their fleet, to monitor the performance and the wear, check the fuel consumption and the resulting emission levels of vehicles, travel times, the driving style of its drivers. The analysis of the fleet also allows professionals to intervene by improving the performance of its vehicles, with a significant impact on levels of profitability, safety and sustainability of their business and, in general, the whole transport system.
Thanks to a two-way communication, the control center can communicate in real time with their drivers pointing variations of the route, new assignments, the hours remaining, the improvements needed to the driving style as well as to intervene in case of breakdowns or unexpected long the street.
With connectivity, it has also been recently concretized the ability to constantly adapt the maintenance plan of the vehicle, based not on mileage but on the actual conditions of use of the vehicle. A real innovation that enables operators to minimize the downtime of the vehicle, with considerable advantages from an economic point of view.

Last spring went on the road the so-called "platoonig", a line of trucks interconnected with the environment traveling together, producing a series of benefits: a first step towards autonomous and sustainable driving. The Netherlands has proposed 2019 as the deadline for cross-border links. What do you think?
The European Truck Platooning Challenge has shown that the technology to implement the platooning and in particular the connection V2V (vehicle-to-vehicle) is already in an advanced state of experimentation. To make this reality concrete, it is necessary to regulate the legal framework and homologate the communications standards, defining rules of engagement that will allow vehicles of different transport companies and manufacturers to form a single platoon when they meet on the road. In view of all this, the 2019 is not an unattainable goal but definitely ambitious.

What are the available technologies in the aftermarket for heavy vehicles and to which ones the manufactures are working for the near future?
One of the recent innovations in the aftermarket area is remote diagnostics, that is being able to check in detail the nature of the anomalies detected by the on-board systems without interrupting the operation of the vehicle. With connectivity, actually, you can remotely assess what type of fault it is and then figure out if you need to stop the activity or if it is a minor problem, the vehicle can continue its path intervening later for the resolution of the problem, thus maximizing operation.
As part of the services, one example is the coaching of drivers, a service that relies on technology that allows you to compare the driver's performance with that of a group of drivers that have similar operating parameters, average distances, topographies and total weights comparable. The objective is to determine the margins for improvement of a driver and then instruct him to a style of safer and environmentally friendly driving and helping to increase the environmental and economic sustainability of the transport company.

At what point is the Italian market? The fleet is one of the oldest in Europe. Do you think that we need a "structural" support more effective for the replacements? What is the attitude of companies with respect to technological innovation of the means?

The manufacturers of freight vehicles have invested considerable sums in technological development of the product, so much so that today can offer the market vehicles that not only meet the most advanced pollution standards and safety, but already foreshadow a future now next, in which priority will have to be given to economic and environmental sustainability as an essential condition for making the Italian transport companies competitive.
However, according to the latest update made on fleet vehicles, the technological and innovation effort of the manufacturers of commercial vehicles is not used properly: most part of the fleet are at least 10 years old and is not equipped with the safety devices currently required for the approval.
It is therefore essential to support enterprises with measures that enable them to invest in sustainable products and services, both economically and environmentally.
The Italian Minister of Economic Development presented the "National Plan Industry 4.0", with which it aims to promote the revival of investment by Italian businesses, with particular attention to innovation: the Plan provides for a 250% super-depreciation for those investing in innovation. However, the super-depreciation for the purchase of vehicles and in general means of transport is only of 120%.
In general terms, the industry manufacturer of commercial vehicles needs a support for investment structurally designed to compete adequately with the other European countries, acting on the taxation of the sector and adopting all necessary measures to lure investment and jobs. The industry manufacturer of commercial vehicles, in a realistic prospect of genuinely sustainable transport development and qualification of logistics in Italy, is aware of being part of a general strategic problem and intend to operate to help in being part of the problem solution, in constant collaboration with trucking companies and with national and local government bodies.

Who is Franco Fenoglio. President and CEO of Italscania Spa and President of the Industrial Vehicles sector of UNRAE, the association of foreign carmakers in Italy.
A degree in Economic Sciences at the University of Turin, 63 years old, the Italscania CEO has held, among others, several management positions in world reference companies. From 1991 to 2005 he worked at Iveco Fiat SpA, first as head of the Sales Department, then as Senior Vice President Sales and Marketing with positions of responsibility of the entire trade process, finally as Executive Vice President International Operations and Business Development, dealing with the management of non-European areas of strategic interest (Asia Pacific, India, China, Turkey, Africa and Middle East and Latin America) and with the Business Development and Joint Ventures activities with international partners. From 2005 to 2007 he held the position of President and CEO of New Holland Construction Equipment S.p.A. and from 2007 to 2012 he was Director of Commercial Vehicles Division of Piaggio & C. S.p.A.

More Efficient, and Even More Convenient: Continental Is Driving Forward Interconnected Technologies in Commercial Vehicles

Data carriers on wheels: In modern trucks and buses, around 170 sensors record data, more than 90 electronic control units process the data, and roughly 150 actuators convert the data into mechanical movement. Thanks to the Internet, the data can be shared easily and external information can be added to them. Increased interconnectivity paves the way for new applications and services for handling performance, vehicle management, logistics, and automated driving. Continental presented several examples of this at the International Motor Show Commercial Vehicles (IAA Commercial Vehicles) in Hanover. Visitors saw for themselves how the ContiPressureCheck system monitors the pressure and temperature of all tires consistently, even while driving. This saves fuel and reduces the risk of a flat tire. The dynamic eHorizon, a sensor system that supplies vehicles with real-time information, creates even more potential savings and provides additional safety. This allows the handling performance to be adapted to the current traffic situation in good time.

A look around the corner: Dynamic eHorizon knows the traffic situation in detail
It is estimated that trucks with eHorizon from Continental have saved nearly 300 million liters of diesel, or around 383 million Euros, since 2012. The sensor system uses highly accurate topographical route data and a GPS signal to provide the control units in the vehicle with information about the route ahead. These then adapt the driving style and speed automatically. Continental is continuously developing this successful series product. The final stage of expansion, the dynamic eHorizon, is a highly accurate information carrier that is always up to date. Thanks to real-time information, it even takes into account dynamic events such as weather, accidents, or traffic jams.
Several applications were used at the IAA to demonstrate the advantages of the system. If the data sources report a traffic jam or roadworks, for example, the dynamic eHorizon forwards this information to the control units. These then prompt the vehicle to coast or shift down a gear. By providing this information in good time, the system not only saves fuel, but can prevent serious accidents by warning drivers of dangers they cannot yet see, such as the tail of a traffic jam around a bend. The technology therefore forms an important basis for automated driving. The dynamic eHorizon also anticipates the road ahead and is just as efficient in urban traffic. With data on traffic light phases, the vehicle can implement an optimum driving strategy.
In addition to other sources, the dynamic eHorizon is supplied with highly accurate, up-to-date route information by the Road Database solution, also developed by Continental. The basic idea behind Road Database uses information from the various vehicle sensors and combines it to create a machine-readable image of the road. It is transmitted wirelessly to a backend, which uses the data provided by several vehicles, such as lane changes or a new traffic sign, to create accurate route data, which it then transmits to all affected vehicles.

Networked tire pressure monitoring at low overall costs
Low tire pressure often results in high operating costs for trucks and buses. In tests on its own test tracks, Continental was able to show that fuel consumption over 100 kilometers increases by 0.7 liters when the tire pressure in a fully loaded truck is just 2 bar too low. The day-to-day stress experienced by drivers often distracts them from keeping a constant eye on tire pressure. The ContiPressureCheck system can help. It uses sensors inside the tires to monitor the pressure and temperature of all tires on the vehicle continuously, during travel and in real time. The data are recorded constantly and shown to the driver on a display. If the tire pressure deviates from the nominal value, the system issues a warning immediately. This enables the driver to take instant measures to eliminate the problem and restore the tire pressure to the normal value.
The system therefore helps to reduce fuel consumption and tire wear while at the same time increasing the service life. With increased efficiency and a longer tire service life, the operating costs of the fleet are reduced. Operators can reduce their operating costs by approximately €1,200 per vehicle per year while improving safety for drivers and vehicles alike. Thanks to a reduction in CO2 emissions, ContiPressureCheck also makes a positive contribution to sustainability. The continuous measurement of tire pressure also increases the safety of the vehicles, as it reduces the risk of a flat tire.
ContiPressureCheck is quick and easy to install and can also be retrofitted at a later point when the tires are changed. It is compatible with various telematics systems. It is integrated in the VDO TIS-Web fleet management software from Continental – a result of the successful collaboration between the Commercial Vehicles and Aftermarket divisions, responsible for commercial vehicle and trade activities at Continental, and Continental Commercial Vehicle Tires, the tire division for commercial vehicles. Fleet managers can see the tire pressure and temperature data directly on their screen. They can use this information to react proactively to tire pressure that is too low and consequently maintain the value of the carcass for the entire service life of the tire.

ITS World Congress 2016: Telespazio, in cooperation with the Ministry of Transport of France, presented the European project CORE and its contribution to C-ITS for freight transport and logistics.

The European project CORE and its preliminary results were presented during the last ITS World Congress held in Melbourne from 10 to 14 October 2016 (www.itsworldcongress2016.com).

The ITS World Congress brings together stakeholders worldwide in order to network, exchange ideas, showcase innovations, create opportunities for cooperation. This year the congress was focused on three main pillars: Cooperative-ITS (C-ITS), Connected and Automated Driving (CAD) and Mobility as a Service (MaaS).
CORE was presented in the frame of a special session on C-ITS, titled "C-ITS for optimizing transport and logistics of goods". Supported by the Ministry of Transport of France, the session looked into projects and initiatives contributing to the implementation of C-ITS in the improvement of the freight transport and logistics, in terms of sustainability, performance, competitiveness and safety.

CORE (Consistently Optimized Resilient Secure Global Supply-Chains, www.coreproject.eu) is a research project co-funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme. CORE analyses the aspects related to the use of advanced technologies for the freight transport and the logistics, to enhance the visibility and improve the security. The project implements various pilot demonstrations to prove and make concrete verifications in real use cases and along European and intercontinental logistic chains.

One of the CORE's pilot demonstrations concerns an ITS solution integrating satellite navigation technologies (GNSS - Global Navigation Satellite System) for tracking and tracing the intermodal transport of chemicals and gas throughout road-rail paths across Europe. In particular, multi-GNSS technologies are used, based on the European systems EGNOS and Galileo, the Russian system GLONASS and the Chinese system BEIDOU.

The presentation during the ITS World Congress was centred on the value of precise and reliable positioning and localization data combined with sensor information about the status of the transported goods, for all stakeholders involved in the transport of dangerous goods. Business stakeholders benefit thanks to enhanced efficiency and safety, and capability to increase the quality of their transport services. From the perspectives of authorities, the advantage relies in the ability to improve risk assessment, emergency management and law enforcement operations, and to have more robust statistics on transport flows.

During the session, an interesting discussion took place with the participation of attendees from Europe and Canada. It was recognized that suitable policies, standardization and the value added services, that can be created through C-ITS, have a key role in the operational deployment of ITS solutions like the one proposed in CORE for tracking and tracing the transport of special goods, such as dangerous and sensitive materials.

The Ministry of Transport of France, involved in this CORE pilot demonstration, considers it among the main projects contributing to the implementation of C-ITS.
