"The future in Italy is Mobility as a Service", the two days of TTS Italia brought together the MaaS ruling class

Councilor Patanè: "You are the accelerator and sentinel of the project"
President Panero: "Time to go from words to deeds"

If "The future in Italy is Mobility as a Service" - as the title of the conference organized by TTS Italia in mid-July in Rome in collaboration with the Municipality of Rome and the patronage of the Department of Mobility of the Capital states and which saw the participation of hundreds of people - then the future is already here. The future is now.
Already from the chosen location, the Petrassi room of the Auditorium Parco della Musica, the largest of the sound boxes designed by Renzo Piano, one immediately felt the acceleration, the leap forward made in just twelve months by this project of "intermodal revolution ”Which promises simpler, more efficient and more connected mobility for citizens. A "tailor made" mobility, tailored to individual needs. In the words of the mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, who opened the two-day event: "MaaS represents a Copernican revolution because it focuses on the user and his travel needs and not on those who provide the service as has happened so far. It is the revolution of the future. The car is not the solution ".
A leap forward and level confirmed by the quality of the participation, the presentations and the debate favored by the two round tables on experimentation and business and on the opportunities that the MaaS opens for Italy, as emphasized by the Capitoline councilor Eugenio Patanè in concluding the you work talking about a "rich and varied landscape" and calling everyone to their responsibilities: "The ruling class that gathered here, politicians, public administrators, mobility operators and technology suppliers, must work as a team to give substance to the objectives set out, which must necessarily start from the public interest. That is, shifting mobility quotas from cars to collective, soft and sharing mobility, reducing emissions and combating tariff evasion. In short, improving the lives of citizens”.
Concepts taken up and reaffirmed by the President of TTS Italia, Rossella Panero, who recalled the cooperation between all the subjects of the demand and supply of mobility and technologies: "Now there are all the pieces of the puzzle and we can move from words to facts, not wasting a perhaps unrepeatable opportunity. Last year we presented with satisfaction the Guidelines for the implementation of MaaS services in Italy to raise the awareness of the competent institutions, the Ministry of Digital Transition (MITD) and the Ministry of Sustainable Mobility and Infrastructures (MIMS), which welcomed the proposals we have made with great interest, also taking advantage of the great opportunity of the PNRR. Exactly one year later we find ourselves launching MaaS4Italy, the result of joint work between central and local institutions, but also of the partnership table launched by MIMS and MITD and of which TTS Italia is a part".
Here are the steps forward. First of all in terms of resources: to the 40 million allocated by the PNRR were added the 17 million of the complementary fund. Then the start of the experimentation: the first three cities identified by public tender - Rome, Naples and Milan - are working to select the participants, at least one thousand for each territory, and to respect very tight deadlines. The pilot projects have a deadline of the third quarter of 2023 so that the conclusions can be presented in Brussels by the end of the year. The three cities that won the second public tender were then announced at the conference: Turin, Florence and Bari, which will have the first quarter of 2024 as their deadline. At the same time, the DS & SRF, the Data Sharing & Service Repository Facility, is being tested. that is the interoperable public national platform that will provide static and dynamic data released by all transport operators, which are essential to start the activity of future MaaS providers.
“This is a world first - underlined Professor Vito Mauro, from the Technical Mission Structure of Mims and coordinator of the project -. We are the first EU country to set up an interoperable public structure that enables any operator interested in organizing the MaaS service ”. The market, Mauro always repeats, will be open and competitive: monopolies must be carefully avoided. “But without integrated pricing and electronic ticketing, the national MaaS does not exist. And not all cities are ready ”, Mauro warned.
During the two days of the conference, together with the two ministries concerned, MIMS and MITD, the cities of Rome, Naples and Milan, the leaders of the experiment, discussed the main aspects of their respective projects, including the technical ones, the stakeholders to be involved and the expected impacts. Space also for the Regions, with Emilia Romagna, Liguria, Piedmont and Veneto who shared their respective experiences of integrated ticketing and the launch of regional Maas.
The contributions of possible MaaS Operators and technology providers are also interesting: from Almaviva to FreetoX, from IBM to Leonardo up to Mindicity of the Tim Group, Targa Telematics, PTV Group, Pluservice, Siemens Mobility and Pwc.
In the final round table, Sauro Mocetti, economist of Bankitalia and economic advisor to the Minister of Sustainable Infrastructures and Mobility, focused on the decisive contribution that MaaS can make to sustainability, a strategic choice by Minister Enrico Giovannini: economic sustainability, because fluid mobility and efficient is an element of competitiveness of cities, social because it must protect the right to mobility and environmental because it also has as its objective the reduction of emissions. Roberto Tundo, Chief Technology Innovation and Digital Officer of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, explained that the MaaS is an integral part of the Group's strategic plan, in particular of the Urban Hub, and that their technological platform is open and shared with the ministries.
All right, then? Anna Donati, President of Rome Mobility Services did not shirk the responsibility of indicating the critical issues: “Behind the MaaS there must be real and well-functioning transport services, let's never forget this. It is necessary to increase the resources for local public transport, the 5 billion from the National Fund in a period still of crisis is not enough, just as it is necessary to lower the VAT for sharing, today at 22%. And bridge the digital divide of inland areas and suburbs. Above all, we need MaaS operators capable of speaking to the world of the car, of convincing motorists to move to less impactful modes of transport".
"TTS Italia is the accelerator, the garrison is the sentinel of the implementation of the MaaS", this is the important recognition received by the councilor Eugenio Patanè at the end of the conference. "See you next year, our commitment will not fail", the president Rossella Panero replied.

MaaS – One Platform for All
Siemens Mobility and its Business Unit Siemens Mobility Software empowers the development of digital mobility infrastructure by implementing Mobility as a Service (MaaS) projects.
Mobility as a Service (MaaS) is one of today's most important trends in mobility. Instead of planning each stage of a journey separately, MaaS solutions combine the services of several providers in one app. The advantages are obvious: just one login, one clear travel overview and one booking and payment process. This service is not quite common yet. However, MaaS is not some kind of future vision, only possible with flying taxis or hyperloop transportation - Mobility as a Service is already available.
Real-life MaaS deployment help to create an alternative to using own cars, to strengthen public transport in rural areas and to promote sustainable travel. This is one way to more efficient and eco-friendly mobility as the change towards ecofriendly forms of mobility is fueled by a growing number of different modes of New Mobility offers.
MaaS platforms combine these new services smartly and the orchestration of such services provides seamless connections that are tailored to the individual’s needs. Although there is a jungle of different mobility providers, passengers can access smart transport chains easily with their favorite MaaS app. The components necessary for establishing Mobility as a Service platforms are readily available and smart trip planners that build their basis can be complemented with different modules easily.

Pioneers in Digital Mobility
MaaS systems can guarantee a seamless, multimodal door-to-door travel experience including real-time information. The companies within Siemens´s business unit Software are pioneers in digital Mobility. The broad portfolio of solutions shows that they have the realization of intermodal solutions virtually in their own DNA - and sustainable mobility as a major goal.

THE CURRENT PROJECT
MaaS in Spain and the Netherlands

Let us have a look at the nationwide MaaS platforms in the Netherlands and Spain. They illustrate the possibilities that MaaS Systems offer: In both MaaS projects, public transport companies invest in the digital mobility infrastructure of an entire country. They promote the variety of mobility services, make public transport and shared mobility even more attractive and, by doing so, contribute to a more sustainable mobility.

The more modes of transport are included in a MaaS platform, the better for the flexibility for the passenger

The Dutch joint venture Rivier, formed by the public transport operators of Rotterdam (RET), the Hague (HTM) and the Dutch National Rail Operator NS, and Siemens Mobility have signed a contract for the development of an intelligent MaaS platform for nationwide deployment. The technology for the platform will be provided by the Siemens Mobility subsidiaries Hacon and eos.uptrade. As an open ecosystem, the Rivier platform can be connected to the mobility apps of different MaaS providers, including the transport companies NS, RET and HTM. The initiators plan to continuously attract more mobility service providers to their project and the Rivier platform, making travel by public transport, bike sharing, car, scooter, or taxi even more accessible and convenient.
Siemens Mobility was also awarded a five-year contract by the Spanish railway company Renfe together with NTT Data. The goal is to develop and operate a nationwide MaaS platform. Once completed, the MaaS service will be available in 29 Spanish cities, including Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Bilbao and Seville. Renfe predicts that the intermodal platform will attract at least 650,000 new customers, who are expected to book 1.8 million trips over a five-year period. Renfe forecasts that the new system could generate up to €156 million in additional revenue in the five years following its launch, thanks to the personalized travel experience.

A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS TO

Filippo Logi, Sales Director, Siemens Mobility Software

What is the main advantage of your MaaS-Solutions?
The software solutions we provide are a crucial part of the world of mobility. They create the basis for making the best possible use of the existing infrastructure and of different transport services.
As specialists in MaaS technology, Siemens Mobility gladly helps to establish Mobility as a Service tailored to the specific needs of transport operators, of cities and of citizens alike. This could be a single trip planning system, as well as a platform, with all possible mobility services integrated: travel recommendations, trip planning, booking and ticketing – all with accurate real-time data, tailored disruption alerts and occupancy information.

Choosing the individual travel connection is easy with a state-of-the art MaaS solution

We combine all different mobility offers in one platform. The results of our work are seamless and easy travel for passengers as well as optimized operational processes for transport providers. The advantages are obvious: just one login, clear travel information and one simple payment process. All of this makes traveling much more intuitive and comfortable. It is a win-win-win situation for the transport companies as well as for the passengers and, finally, for the environment. We call this simply: Plan. Book & Ride.

This sounds really good. Passengers can easily find the best connection and gain independence of their private car – even outside the city centers. What can such a MaaS project look like in concrete terms?
Many transport associations and regional authorities continuously invest in improving the passenger travel experience, including easier ways to plan, book and pay for trips using multiple modes of transport. In addition to regular public transport offerings, shared mobility services, Demand Responsive Transport, road traffic information as well as bike and pedestrian routing, ferries and even flight connections can be integrated and booked via the app.

Where can we learn more about Mobility as a Service?
Together with Siemens Mobility, the ticketing specialists from eos.uptrade and Bytemark as well as PADAM Mobility, our experts for on-demand transport, Hacon has created an information channel for MaaS: https://www.ma a s-platform.com. Interested Parties can find background information on MaaS as well as news, projects, and further information there.

Airport Bus shuttles. A case study by OpenMove

For over 90 years, the Autostradale group has been one of the leaders in Italy in public transportation. The group provides long-distance bus service as well as airport shuttle connections for operations in both Italy and England at London’s Stansted airport thanks to its subsidiary Airport Bus Express.
This widespread transportation network is present in all major hubs and it is a fundamental piece of Autostradale’s customer-oriented strategy which aims to be present where its customers are, and to consistently offer quality service and a problem-free journey.

The challenge
For on-the-go ticket sales, Autostradale relied on both pre-printed paper tickets, which had to be produced, stored and distributed through a secure system, as well as on tickets printed on demand thanks to handheld devices. This system, besides having high management costs, did not provide a solid validity control system: tickets were easy to counterfeit and therefore vulnerable to possible fraudulent actions.
Furthermore, the solution used to print tickets was based on proprietary hardware devices that created dependence from the supplier which required frequent maintenance and a situation of vendor lock-in, while leading to inevitable obsolescence.

The solution
Autostradale decided to explore innovative solutions to streamline its operations and improve the entire travel experience of its customers and engaged with OpenMove in 2017. The partnership between Autostradale and OpenMove has led to the development of a software solution that can be used by all field operators in the different geographies and operating conditions they handle. It was key that the application could work both online, with real-time synchronization of data with the central server, and offline in case of poor or absent connectivity.
A 24/7 Service Level Agreement was instituted as another essential component for the transport service provided by Autostradale, which has hourly service, peak traffic several times during the day and operates nearly 24 hours a day.
Thanks to the integration via API with a third-party e-commerce channel, the solution allows not only to print paper tickets by merging all the data into a single platform, but also to validate tickets sold through the e-commerce itself, which are recognized by the app and on which the validity check is carried out.
The software application developed by OpenMove is based on the Android operating system and can be used on any Android device on the market, including off-the shelf smartphones, thus avoiding the investment in expensive hardware. The service is deployed as a cloud based service to minimize internal management costs and ensure high availability, fault tolerance, load balancing and disaster recovery of the services.
To test the system, a six-month pilot project was carried out on one of the Italian lines operated by Autostradale. The success of the project and the advantages brought forward with the new method exceeded expectations and it was decided to extend the use of the software application to all lines within the following two months.
Thanks to the new solution, Autostradale benefit from the very first month from:

The innovation
Autostradale’s solution for the sale and validation of tickets for field operators has been operational for more than 5 years and, over this period, Autostradale has involved OpenMove in other initiatives aimed at improving operations and profitability.
At the beginning of 2020 OpenMove released a white label app for Autostradale, downloadable for free from the App Store and Play Store: the ticket has thus become totally digital and users can, by accessing the app, get information about timetables and select and purchase different tariffs. The QR code on the digital ticket can then be read and validated by the same application already in use among Autostradale on-field operators.
In June 2021, the QR code Express Purchase was launched: customers now have the possibility to autonomously purchase Autostradale tickets at the stops by simply framing a QR code and finalizing the payment with a single click and without having to download or sign up to any app.

These solutions have made it possible to:
• Ease the Autostradale staff in the daily peaks of customers wanting to access the service;
• Improve the speed of customers boarding as compared to the competition;
• Minimize physical exchanges between people, which became a very important factor during the pandemic.
To date, the solution has been successfully implemented both on the Italian lines managed by Autostradale as well as on the lines running in London.
Autostradale, driven by the positive trend of customers increasingly relying on electronic payments, wanted to switch to an all-in-one device for issuing, printing, validating and paying for tickets. The previous solution included smartphones with a Bluetooth printer and a separate POS device for cashing electronic payments. After a careful evaluation of the various solutions available on the market, Autostradale’s choice fell on the PAX A920 device: OpenMove therefore implemented the portability of its software application on the device, integrating with the Payment Service Provider chosen by Autostradale.
The use of a lean and fast sales and control application, in combination with a compact device that allows the cashing of electronic payments, has allowed us to better serve our customers, while improving the operation of our staff on the field, who can now manage all operations with a single device. “
Giorgio Rendo, Sales Operations Manager Autostradale

The solution was first launched in the English airport of London Stansted – where Autostradale operates with Airport Bus Express – and, because of its success among the users, has later extended to the Italian territory.

Introducing the Moova Space Pass Educational Program
Thanks to a framework agreement between the University of Naples Federico II, AlmavivA, TTS Italia ordinary members, and ANM Azienda Napoletana Mobilità, the Moova Space Passprogram is kicking off, with the objective of substantially stimulating the creation of new skills and professional figures related to digital transformation in the world of transportation, infrastructure, and services. An initiative promoted as part of the Smart Mobility and Logistics Center of Excellence.
Presented today in the Sala Croce of the University of Naples Federico II, the program is full of jointly organized appointments and workshops that focus heavily on innovation within the world of mobility, as well as its transformation and the technologies that support this ongoing change. This is the main focus of the Moova Space Pass program, which includes educational and training activities and is aimed at students of both undergraduate and master's programs, as well as Ph.D. students, young researchers, and professionals, offering multi-level participation modules. Different passes allow access to the various community spaces within the program, spaces which are either physical or virtual and dedicated to discussion and learning.
The partnership between the university and companies in the sector is also aimed at facilitating collaboration and encouraging the entry of talented young men and women into the world of employment and innovation.
“Federico II and these two important companies, AlmavivA and Azienda Napoletana di Mobilità, have come together to create a program of technological innovation and training,” says Cino Bifulco, Coordinator of the Master’s Degree Program in Transportation Engineering and Mobility at Federico II. “Moova Space Pass provides entry steps into the educational world and then into the professional world and the world of employment. A mixed experience that aims not only to build tools, but also to train individuals, all in the ever-changing field of mobility and transportation. The goal is to train new engineers with particular expertise in the field of mobility, but who, at the same time, are capable of addressing and using technological innovation to meet the mobility challenges of the future. This will be a time of revolution and great change, and we want to be a central part of it.”
“At a time of enormous development in the world of mobility, it’s necessary to create an ecosystem that supports skills and can guide and sustain the ongoing transformation,” says Smeraldo Fiorentini, AlmavivA’s Director of Transportation and Logistics. “All of the primary areas of innovation in the sector, from decarbonization to vehicle connectivity, from the transformation of urban mobility models to new means of transportation, all the way to autonomous cars, need new lifeblood, ideas, and skills. The agreement was established with the objective of developing professional roles that are capable of designing the mobility of the future, in line with the goals of the NRRP.”
“In the next few years, mobility service companies will face two major challenges: on the one hand, the entire surface fleet’s conversion to electric power, and, on the other, the complete digitalization of production and sales processes,” says Nicola Pascale, ANM's Sole Director. “To meet these challenges, creating synergy between the corporate production world and the world of research and university expertise is essential. ANM invests in the personal and professional growth of young men and women with this aim, something which undoubtedly involves university education. Therefore, all initiatives that take this approach are to be embraced and promoted, especially those that focus on the incredible opportunities that technology offers us today. New skills are needed in order to develop a new way of designing mobility services.”
The initiative was developed within the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering (DICEA), but also involves the undergraduate programs within the Department of Structures for Engineering and Architecture (DIST) and is sponsored by the City of Naples.
The Moova Space Pass program is an initiative promoted by the Smart Mobility and Logistics Center of Excellence, established in March 2021 through the partnership between the University of Naples Federico II and AlmavivA in order to accelerate digital transformation in the world of transportation, infrastructure, and services. The center’s objective is to design the mobility of the future - for people and goods, by land, sea, or air - from the perspective of environmental, economic, and social sustainability, and with a strong focus on safety and accessibility, the central role of the user and the travel experience, and management efficiency.

Stellantis invests €33 Million in Global Testing Hubs for Cutting-Edge Engineering
Stellantis engineering teams around the world are focused on creating cutting-edge vehicles that deliver clean, safe, and affordable mobility. Stellantis, TTS Italia ordinary member, recently invested a total of €33 million in two of its global testing facilities to support the Company's long-term strategy to achieve best-in-class electric vehicle (EV) performance and master the highest level of autonomous driving technology while ensuring safe and reliable technology for its customers.
These investments, among other R&D Capex, expand Stellantis’ global capability to engineer the future of mobility, accelerate its transformation into a sustainable mobility tech company and propel the Company toward the goals of the Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan, notably a 50% reduction in carbon emissions from 2021 levels by 2030 and carbon net zero emissions by 2038.
The recent enhancements include:
Orbassano Safety Center, near Turin, Italy, is fully integrated with digital engineering processes and significantly upgraded to host four test tracks with four impact points and capabilities for full testing of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and automated driving technology for passenger cars, trucks, and light commercial vehicles.
Wind Tunnel in Auburn Hills, Michigan, U.S., being scaled up with the addition of moving ground plane technology, simulating on-road travel and providing more accurate aerodynamics measurement of vehicles. Reducing wind drag benefits the driving range of BEVs.
"Our world-class tech hubs across the globe are doing the work today that will make tomorrow's Stellantis vehicles industry leaders in capability, performance and safety," said Harald Wester, Stellantis Chief Engineering Officer. "Our engineering community is fueled by talent, diversity and global reach, and we are intensely working with the other global functions, as our Monozokuri peers, to energize the core of our technological transformation. It gives us a comprehensive view of the challenges and enables us to consider and refine a full menu of mobility solutions that will put us in the front row of the race to innovate and improve."
Key goals of the Stellantis Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan include reaching 100% of passenger car BEV sales mix in Europe and 50% passenger car and light-duty truck BEV sales mix in the United States by 2030.
The €5 million in upgrades for the Orbassano Safety Center give it the capability to test all types of electrified vehicles - mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles. The facility currently runs at least two crash tests a day and is on track to test more than 275 electrified vehicles this year. Vehicles tested at Orbassano can be certified to meet more than 175 international safety and technological standards.
The impact zone of the test tracks is fitted with a Messring movable block for front and side-impact tests, and Orbassano runs some of the industry's most-challenging tests including the passenger-side small overlap test being used by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Orbassano's test tracks include a computer-driven camera positioning system with 13 moveable outboard camera locations over the impact point. In addition, the tracks include the capability for underbody high-speed video, while up to five cameras can be mounted on board the test vehicle.
All these views, plus the instrumented data, provide Stellantis engineers with invaluable data for evaluating current and future vehicle designs. Additionally, the data is shared with Stellantis facilities around the world, including the additional safety testing centers in Belchamp, France; Chelsea, Michigan, U.S.; and Betim, Brazil, to refine digital vehicle development models.
This state-of-the-art facility is fully integrated with Stellantis’ safety digital engineering process, allowing the most efficient vehicle development and virtually covering all possible field crash scenarios.
The new tracks are ready to accommodate future test modes related to the introduction of automated driving functions on all types of vehicles.
Orbassano's arsenal includes static and dynamic test fixtures for factors such as pedestrian impact, roof crush and rollover, and test sleds to evaluate seating and vehicle interiors. Seat and interior testing become more critical as the adoption of future automated driving technologies hold the potential for new cabin seating configurations.
Aerodynamic efficiency is a crucial difference-maker in the drive to optimize the distances electrified vehicles can travel on a single charge. That requires simulating the real driving world as accurately as possible.
At the Stellantis wind tunnel complex in Auburn Hills, Michigan, construction is in progress to install moving ground plane technology (rolling road), which simulates on-road travel while allowing test vehicles to remain static. Stellantis is investing $29.5 million in the project.
Belts enable wheel movement at all four corners of the vehicle while a fifth belt runs beneath the vehicle as if it were rolling over a roadway. Moving ground plane technology also enables measurement of ventilation drag, which is the resistance associated exclusively with wheels and tires in motion. It accounts for up to 10 percent of total, real-world aerodynamic drag.
The existing aerodynamic test facility in Auburn Hills generates wind speeds up to 140 mph. The moving ground plane installation, part of an estimated $85 million commitment included in the Company's 2019 contract with the United Auto Workers, is scheduled to become operational in 2024.
The added capability will complement the world-class aero-acoustic wind tunnel in Auburn Hills as part of a global network of leading-edge centers also equipped with moving ground plane technology, including two facilities in Europe.

TTS Italia, represented by its Vice President Bruno Pezzuto, took part in the Smart City Observatory workshop "Innovating urban mobility for sustainability: the contribution of Mobility as a Service", held on 12 July 2022 at Bocconi University in Milan , and online.
Mobility as a service (MaaS - Mobility as a Service) allows the integration of various forms of transport into a mobility service accessible on request through digital platforms. MaaS can play an important role in promoting multimodality, the transition to more sustainable modes of transport and more efficient use of transport networks. The “Strategy for smart and sustainable mobility” adopted by the European Commission in December 2020 recognizes the fundamental role of digital solutions in achieving multimodality in urban and suburban areas. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on transport and urban mobility, in particular on the use of public transport, but at the same time it has contributed to the emergence of more flexible travel habits, for example due to the increase in work from home. MaaS applications can represent a tool to facilitate users in the choice and use of sustainable transport solutions and to optimize their travel with a view to flexibility, acting on the demand side; at the same time, these platforms allow operators to evaluate and optimize the transport offer. The meeting involved transport managers, public transport operators, and mobility experts to discuss possible innovations towards more sustainable urban mobility.
In particular, the Vice President was among the speakers of the Round Table dedicated to "Perspectives for innovating urban mobility in smart cities".
