"Cashless and cash, so Italians and foreigners pay for mobility", director Valeria Portale talks about the results of the research of the Innovative Payments Observatory of the Politecnico di Milano

How widespread are digital payment tools in the purchase of mobility services? More generally, when moving around the country and into cities, Italians and foreigners mainly use cash or do they prefer credit cards, apps, wallets? From these questions arose the choice of the two digital Observatories of the Politecnico di Milano Innovative Payments and Digital Innovation of Tourism to join forces to take a wide-ranging photograph on the different modes of transport. Short, medium and long distance, by plane, train - High Speed and regional -, long-range buses, ferries, local public transport - bus, tram and metro -, taxi and car. rental, the LTZ, sharing mobility, parking - on the road and in the structure -, and the motorway toll.
We asked Valeria Portale, director of the Innovative Payments Observatory, to guide us in discovering the results of the research, entitled "Mobility in Italy: market values and payment instruments 2019-2021", which was presented in Milan mid-February.

What was the first obstacle you encountered on the way?
The difficulty of quantifying the economic value of the various reference markets - the Portal finger points -, therefore of estimating the expenditure per single method used by Italian and foreign citizens. So, we integrated the top-down methodology, with the use of Istat (National Institute for Statistics) statistics, with a bottom-up approach through about fifty interviews with the main operators. Having determined these values, which in any case need to be refined, we worked to understand the channels with which the transport services and underlying payments are purchased and the evolution of trends in the three-year period 2019-2021.

Broadly speaking, what situation have you found?
We found a strong focus on payment methods, affected by a phase of profound transformation. Operators are more aware of the importance of making access to the purchase of travel tickets easier and more fluid. The situation is patchy but there are two worlds: one with a medium-high receipt and the other with a medium-low receipt. The first is the world of long distance, air transport and high speed, where digitization is already a reality and where online channels favoring digital payments clearly prevail. The second is the world with an average receipt that does not exceed five euros, where cash is largely privileged and digital payments are subject to low penetration. This applies to local public transport, parking, taxis.

Unfortunately, your analysis is part of a three-year period in which, due to the Covid 19 pandemic, there has been a dramatic decline in mobility and consequently in the revenues of operators.
It is so. None of the sectors we analyzed in 2021 had recovered the values of 2019. The least penalized was the world of tolls which reached 90%, with parking at 74%, ferries at 72%, sharing mobility at 71% and trains and taxis at 67%. The most affected sector is the aviation sector, which lost 59% on 2019, with the market plummeting from 14.5 billion to 5.9 billion and it is still not clear when it will return to normal. All transportation markets were growing year over year while now living in a completely different scenario. With medium and long-haul mobility that paid the highest price.

What is the state of digital payments in the different segments, who is ahead, who is behind?
First of all, it should be noted that the pandemic had a virtuous effect because it led to greater use of the most advanced payment methods. The most digitized sector is air transport. The long-haul train is also on similar percentages, with cash at 23% and online payments increasingly relevant. The same applies to motorway tolls, where the use of cash does not exceed 20%. Sharing mobility was born digital, it can be accessed with a smartphone and digital payment is the only possible tool, cash just doesn't exist. Also, for the entrances to the LTZ we have registered a strong impulse to the most innovative systems, such as the telepass.

Urban mobility is at the other extreme.
With the exception of cities like Rome and Milan, where the subway is paid by credit card, cash is used for bus and tram tickets, we are around 85%. Cash which dominates even more heavily the parking on blue stripes, where we are around 88%. Precisely in local public transport and in street parking lots we encounter important criticalities due to the lack of entry of the most advanced technologies: in the first case, in particular, but not only, for foreigners who visit our cities and often cannot understand where and how to buy tickets. In the second case, because the motorist ends up hunting for coins and does not always find them. While the car parks in the structure see a 44% share of digital payments, via cards and telepass. A lot of cash also for taxis, around 75%, with negative repercussions especially for tourists arriving from abroad.

What can we expect for the near future?
The war risks blocking the evolution towards digital payments that we had observed over the three years. It is difficult for companies, which are experiencing a particularly difficult time between the queue of Covid and the war in Ukraine, to prioritize innovation. Those who have already invested will reap the rewards, capitalize on the choices made while the audience of actors who have not done so can hardly recover now, with the drastic reduction in revenues they have suffered. You risk getting stuck in cash and traditional sales channels.

PROJECT IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Pilot tests of International Fast & Secure Trade Lanes between Italy and Turkey, Morocco and Egypy (realized within European project FENIX) have been successfully concluded

Pilot tests of “International Fast & Secure Trade Lanes” to simplify logistic and customs flows and realized within European project FENIX (coordinated by ERTICO at European level and by the Ministry of infrastructure and transport as recipient through TTS Italia at a national level) have been successfully concluded.
This project lays the foundation for the digitalization and harmonization of the document flows between the various actors involved in the Corridoralso through use of IoT (Internet of Things) technologies and ISO compliant eSeals with RFID electronic components with a numbered sequence which allows immediate identification of each container and (for those authorized) its content, as well as any tampering.
One of the main aspects of the project is the ability of the various components of the system to constantly dialogue with each other on compatible parameters: eSeals on containers and technologies installed at port gates or standard mobile devices, allow to automatically detect the numbering corresponding to the seal, identify all related documents (for example, the dispatch note, origin and phytosanitary certificates) drastically reducing errors and slowdowns for inspections, and anticipating risk analysis.
This allows a remarkable simplification and speeding up of the management of logistic and customs flows both in import and export.
Pilot tests involved various primary terminal operators and intrenational shipping companies on the following connections between Italy (Ports of Genoa, La Spezia and Trieste) and Turkey (Ports of Pendik, Mersin and Cesme), Marocco (Port of Casablanca) and Egypt (Port of Alexandria):

TWO QUESTIONS TO

Luca Abatello – President & CEO at CIRCLE Group

Which are the main trends in the ports, transport and logistics and how does CIRCLE satisfy the needs of the market?
The logistics market is demanding solutions that are increasingly smart, sustainable and capable of conditioning processes in a positive way, especially in terms of efficiency, simplification, automation and safety.
CIRCLE GROUP has answered to this challenge, on the one hand, by strengthening the proprietary software platforms and, on the other, by accelerating its offer of the so-called "federative services", agile and flexible services presented to the market in 2020, strongly evolved in 2021-22 and offered in cloud and also pay-per-use mode.
We are convinced that we have been able to anticipate and translate the next challenges of Supply Chain market within the Strategic Road Map 2024, summarized by the claim "Connect 4 Agile Growth" which represents the need for simplified and more effective connections between all stakeholders in the logistics chain.

Alexio Picco - Managing Director at CIRCLE Group and President at Magellan Circle

How important is it to innovate products and solutions in line with the main European policies?
Right now, it is more important than ever to be able to seize European opportunities and benefit from the funds allocated under the great Green Deal policy: digitalisation, energy transition, sustainability and circular economy are the key words.
CIRCLE has been able to read in advance this strategic opportunity because support for the search for funding and marketing and communication services for the logistics field have been distinctive of our positioning since Circle S.p.A. was established in 2012.
The acquisition of Magellan Circle has given a further boost to our internationalization process and, with more than Euro 3.4 million of European projects awarded in the last 14 months, the first results of the integration with Circle Connecting EU have been extremely satisfactory, as proof of the goodness of joint venture and development path undertaken.

Anas at the XIV International Congress Winter Service and Resilience

February 7-11 2022, the 16th Winter Viability Congress was held, organized by PIARC 4 years.
As usual, Italy was present both in the technical sections, with thematic reports, and in the Exhibition, with the Italian Pavilion where the main members were hosted.
For the first time an international PIARC event was held on a virtual platform to cope with the logistical and travel difficulties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
More than 780 delegates in the five days of the Conference with technical sessions and the awarding of the best technical papers presented from all over the world.
Italy participated in the International Exposition with its own pavilion together with Spain, USA, France, Canada, South Korea and Japan.

The Italian Pavilion hosted the stands of Anas bringing to the attention of Congress, along with other member countries of the Association such as USA, France, Spain, Canada, Korea and Japan, the best practices that are the flagship of the road company.
On the topic of road management in winter conditions Anas presented the Road Winter Information System (RWIS) developed together with Bucher Municipal - Giletta, also a PIARC member and present in the Italian Pavilion.
A "smart road" must use technological evolutions to improve and optimize maintenance activities and, in particular, the management of winter activities.
The efficient and effective management of Winter Maintenance can only derive from the information related to current/future weather conditions and road surface conditions, as well as from the data related to maintenance operations recorded by the equipment in the field. Thus, this information is a prerequisite for the decision-making process underlying strategies and operations for winter event management and the management of responsible personnel.
The winter maintenance authority is responsible for, among other things:
- Constant monitoring of weather conditions.
- Constant monitoring of road surface conditions.
- Monitoring the location and status of maintenance vehicles.
The Road Winter Information System (RWIS) is a software tool that collects all available data on weather, road conditions, traffic, and operational tools to support decision making in winter road maintenance management. RWIS integrates current data from roadside weather stations, weather radar and satellites, cameras, mobile roadside weather stations, national, regional or inland weather service.
The RWIS system provides a comprehensive overview of historical weather data, current real-time data, forecasts, and road surface condition data. The system can include models that provide not only weather forecasts, but also specific forecasts regarding the road surface.
The AOS system has an application that allows the connection of a number of mobile sensors to update road conditions in real time, sending the following information:
AOS, connected to Smart Road, downloads all information related to road conditions:
- Road temperature.
- Air temperature.
- Road condition (wet, dry, ice, snow, etc.).
- Friction value.
- Section of road in salting operation.
- Section of road already treated.
- Section of road in snow removal operation.
- Section of road already cleared of snow.
This information is displayed in real time on traffic panels or directly on the smartphones and navigation systems of road users.
The AOS can also receive all information about the state of the road from traffic (vehicles driving on the section of road under consideration). In the future, self-driving cars will be able to determine more parameters related to actual road conditions. The AOS will use these in addition to existing data, to define the best operating parameters. For more information, click here.

The Smart Road
Still on the subject of digitization of the road infrastructure, the Anas Smart Road was presented, a project that has already been widely implemented and tested on some of the company's roads.
The Anas Smart Road project is an enabling technology for the development of Smart Mobility and preparatory to future scenarios of autonomous driving of vehicles.
The project, aimed at improving road safety and making traffic flows more efficient, is based on a complex digital platform that is articulated on the road network as a nervous system with the support of technologies such as IoT (Internet of Things), AI (Artificial Intelligence), Big Data and advanced sensors through the development of the national ultra-broadband network.
In line with the guidelines received from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility, Anas has started to conceive Smart Roads well in advance in Europe. The goal is to provide the country with an efficient road network, progressively improving and open to the new challenges of the future: from electric power to assisted driving and beyond, as in the case of self-driving vehicles. For more information, click here.

Passive safety and environmental and acoustic mitigation
On the subject of passive safety and environmental and acoustic mitigation, Anas presented the new anti-noise barrier and DYNAMAP, a cutting-edge noise pollution detection system.

A.N.A.S., acronym for Anti-Noise Acoustic Screen, is a project that aims to develop a sustainable noise reduction device suitable for road transport infrastructures. The project aims to facilitate the implementation of noise mitigation measures in ordinary critical scenarios, according to environmental and landscape constraints. The central idea of the project is based on the development of a sustainable, modular and flexible shielding solution, with its own visual identity, adaptable to different environmental and territorial contexts and equipped with interchangeable panels in different materials. To do so, a preliminary sustainability analysis based on commercial products was carried out in order to identify the most suitable and environmentally friendly commercial solutions. The analysis was carried out using a simplified procedure described in the European project QUIESST, in which the main types of noise barriers were analyzed in terms of social, environmental, economic and technical impact. The sustainability analysis was performed using the simplest and most intuitive method, namely the SAW (Simple Additive Weighting) linear additive model. The evaluation criteria were retrieved from the QUIESST project and the necessary data were provided by noise barrier manufacturers. The results of this preliminary analysis allowed us to obtain key information on the sustainability of various solutions and materials. This information was used to guide the design of two prototype noise barriers, called CLIP and STRIPE.

In 2014, the DYNAMAP project took its first steps toward developing a system capable of detecting and representing the acoustic impact of road infrastructure in real time. The goal of this project is to facilitate and speed up the updating of noise maps that, according to 2002/49/EC on environmental noise, must be delivered every five years. To this end, an automatic monitoring system, based on low cost custom sensors and a software tool implemented in a general GIS platform, has been developed and built in two pilot areas located along the A90 freeway surrounding the city of Rome (Italy) and within the agglomeration of Milan (Italy).
After more than four years of work, focused on system design, hardware and software component development, construction and testing of the pilot systems, the project is now approaching the final phase, where the accuracy, reliability and sustainability of the system will be evaluated.
All the products and projects presented by Anas are aimed at the digitalization of road management in view of the automation of driving. A road that is not only safe but also usable and shared.

MaaS in Alto Adige with OpenMove

The challenge OpenMove has taken up is the creation of the South Tyrol passenger information platform, which is divided into the following four main activities:
• integration of data and mobility services of the territory;
• implementation of the journey planning engine;
• release of APIs for the use by third parties;
• development of the highly configurable front end portal in terms of layout and functionalities.
The work is part of the MENTOR project, funded by the Interreg-V-A Italy-Switzerland program, coordinated by the Municipality of Merano and carried out in collaboration with NOI Techpark, SASA, the Municipality of Brig-Glis in the Canton of Valais and Postauto. The goal of the project, which started at the end of 2018, is to demonstrate the potential of “Mobility-as-a-Service” (MaaS) in the two pilot municipalities, representative of the Alpine environment.
NOI (the in-house agency of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano in charge of stimulating research activities, promoting scientific innovation and acting as a reference point for Information Technology in the South Tyrolean territory) intends to invest in MaaS to reduce the use of cars private sector in favor of more sustainable modes of transport, in line with its mission to develop new products and services, generating widespread value on the territory and across borders.
The initial context of this project featured the following requirements:
• the availability of data in the so-called Open Data Hub, an open data aggregator that aims to support the implementation of innovative platforms for the province of Bolzano;
• the will to focus on open source technologies supported by a strong developer community: OpenTripPlanner for intermodal route calculation, Pelias for geocoding and Docker for the deployment of the solution;
• the desire to replace the previously used portal to take advantage of the new features available, improving the user experience, allowing easier integration of additional information and optimizing data exchange in order to minimize client-side processing and make the application efficient even in the case of hardware with limited performance.
Particular attention was paid to the specificities of the South Tyrolean territory, a border region between Italy and Austria with a strong tourist presence and therefore with the natural predisposition to Italian, German and English trilingualism.

The solution
The platform amounts to a Level 1 MaaS solution, which – according to the MaaS topology – considers the systematization of multiple transport services featuring passenger information and route planing and that represents the starting point for possible evolutions towards Level 2 MaaS scenarios, which also integrate booking and payment functionalities, and Level 3, which also include fare integration.
The new user portal integrates a number of passenger information features, in particular:
• an intermodal journey planner, with the ability to customize searches through a series of highly configurable settings;
• a rich interactive map with different levels of data visualization, optimized for the specific transport services considered in the project;
• dynamic timetables to show arrivals at the stop in real time.
Fundamental to the success of a MaaS project are effective intermodality and real-time characteristics, which allow the ridership to rely on a complete and reliable travel companion.
The project developed by OpenMove, based on these cornerstones, is structured upon the following components visible in the figure.

A well-known open source intermodal journey planning engine has been adopted, namely OpenTripPlanner (OTP), which is already in use by multiple mobility information providers worldwide.
OTP is able to acquire numerous types of transport service data as inputs:
• Public transport (GTFS and GTFS-Realtime format)
• Bike sharing and other micromobility sharing services (GBFS format)
• On-demand transport (GTFS-Flex format)
The application uses maps that describe the road network of a given area in the form of files in OpenStreetMap format (OSM/PBF) and digital elevation model (DEM) to elaborate more detailed walking or cycling routes.
Furthermore, some additional modules have been built to make possible the integration of real-time data from:
• Parking facilities
• Parking sports monitored by IoT devices
• Car sharing services
Thanks to the numerous endpoints exposed by the REST API and the GraphQL functionality, it is possible to consult the transport data processed, plan a route or generate isochrones. Therefore, thanks to the APIs developed by OpenMove, it is also feasible to create new front ends dedicated to specific needs or to certain areas and contexts: for example, a planner for cycle routes only or a portal that focuses on the city’s electric mobility.

The benefits
The realization of this solution, now available at the addresses mobility.meran.eu and mobility.bz.it, made us reflect on the following lessons learned:
1. The user is at the center of the mobility scenario
A uniform and consistent user-centered design approach led to an improvement in the user experience and performance of the application compared to the previous solution, optimizing UX and UI for mobile use and for impaired users. There are multiple display layers that can be activated and deactivated at will and many configuration options of the route calculation engine, so as to allow users great flexibility in planning the route. The new portal also improves multilingual support, in order to make the solution expandable and easy to use even in tourist contexts.
2. The importance of data standards for modeling transport services
Designing a MaaS platform nowadays requires considerable architectural work to ensure scalability in the addition of new transport services, flexibility in considering different use cases, increase of the usage volume and extension of the geographical perimeter.
The most widely used de facto standards on the market (GTFS, GTFS-Realtime, GTFS-Flex, GBFS) are sufficiently extended and flexible to cover the description of all the mobility services currently present in modern cities: their native availability and support therefore enables quick integrations and effective implementations.
3. Intermodality and real-time fruition are the cornerstones of tomorrow’s sustainable mode
The solution aggregates a large variety of fully integrated transport services into a single platform, thus allowing effective intermodality (i.e. considering modal changes within the route):
• bus
• train
• personal bike
• car sharing
• bike sharing
• on-demand service
• EV charging
• e-scooters
• parking on the street and in facilities
For example, park&ride scenarios are considered (i.e. the use of the car to reach the train or the bus station): it is an interesting case because the platform combines traffic data, real-time parking availability and estimated time of arrival of the train. In the case of bike&ride, the system considers the availability in real time at the bike sharing stations and favors the safest roads for two wheels.
Ultimately, the South Tyrol intermodal passenger information platform created by OpenMove represents one of the most advanced solutions available on the market today.
A particular consideration deserves the choice of open source within this project. Our tech team contributes to the development of open source technologies on a regular basis, taking advantage of the large developers community already active in the smart mobility sector.
Proud of the results achieved, we decided to share a glimpse of our technology, releasing the source code of the portal and of the integration modules on a public repository (available at this address) with an open license, so that many other entities can enhance their passenger information solutions or contribute to the enrichment of the functionalities of our project.

The YOUMOBIL project – Relaunching youth mobility in rural areas in a time of pandemic

The INTERREG Central Europe "YOUMOBIL" project has been fulfilled at the end of March 2022. It started in April 2019 and T BRIDGE - ordinary member of TTS Italia - is one of the eight project partners located in six different European countries.
Poor and inefficient mobility options in rural and decentralized areas are the most frequent reasons why young people choose to leave their area of origin and migrate to the larger cities in their region or even beyond, intensifying the population decline that concerns most of the rural areas of Europe.
The YOUMOBIL project, therefore, aims to reverse this trend.

Collaborating directly with young people, T Bridge coordinated the experimentation activities of five pilot projects from as many European locations.
The proposed solutions range from on-call or DRT / taxi services at low demand times, to the improvement and creation of apps to promote local public transport, to innovative loyalty program services and even night transport, addressing primarily young inhabitants of the rural realities but also aiming at the creation of benefits for the whole community.

In addition to this, further six investment actions have also been tested and they are highlighting the potential of the active co-participation of young people in the revitalization and enhancement of public buildings and dismissed or abandoned spaces on the railway, creating functional solutions for the well-being of the whole local community.
The solutions and trials were promptly adapted to the new mobility needs that emerged in consideration of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As this is a mobility-based project, the impact of the pandemic has been very significant. The restrictions have in fact affected the mobility of everyone and in particular those of young people.

Through an international online questionnaire and Big Data analysis on mobility, the project had the opportunity to analyse the change occurred in the European context. Understanding how the people’ needs and habits evolve, allows us to identify innovative, tailor-made and, above all, effective solutions for the communities.
In the metropolitan area of Modena, with the collaboration of the partner aMo - Modena Mobility Agency - and using Floating Car Data (FCD), it was performed a cross-analysis of the data collected from the online survey and the data from the private vehicle fleet circulating in the town. It was focused on the mobility to the main High schools of the town.
Briefly, according to both the COVID-19 survey and the FCD analysis, indeed, the significant impact of the pandemic is characterized primarily by a generalized decline in mobility and an increase in the frequency of use of cars.
Furthermore, comparing the FCD mobility variation between 2019 and 2021 towards Modenas’ high schools and towards Modena in general, the analysis suggests three types of trends:
- A similar decrease;
- A slight increase compared to city mobility. This suggests that car has captured the demand from public transport;
- A much more noticeable decrease. In this case, it should be noted that it took place in areas where a new cycle path has been inaugurated. Therefore, it is possible to assume that, if adequate transport alternatives (e.g. cycle paths) are available to the public, car users are inclined to a different modal choice in favour of more sustainable modes.
The analyses were shared among the stakeholders and with young people in summer schools, at conferences and these were promoted in the form of "toolbox" and operative guidelines, in order to capitalize on the solutions studied and applied. The entire detailed documentation and contact details of the partners are available on the project website.

Active Mobility: RSM promotes Bicycle Heroes
The city of Rome through Roma Servizi per la Mobilità (RSM), TTS Italia ordinary member, will involve middle school children to contribute to the design of urban cycle paths and promote active mobility. The project called "Bicycle Heroes" (Youth Voices for Active Mobility) started at the end of January and is supported by EIT Urban Mobility and co-financed by the European Union.
It will see the cities of Rome, Lisbon and Dublin, over the course of 2022, united in creating solutions to the barriers that students face on a daily basis to reach school on foot or by bicycle. The program has been successfully pioneered by the coordinating organization BYCS in the past five years in the Netherlands. BYCS is an Amsterdam-based global NGO that supports community-driven urban change through cycling.
The project manager for RSM Francesco Iacorossi declared “Bicycle Heroes is also linked to our Desire and Strade Scolastiche initiatives and is the perfect continuation of the Handshake project. We will work with groups of children aged between 10 and 15, to provide the tools that allow them to redesign the city space and improve their movements. It is essential that children influence the design of these patterns: they are the ones most affected and they are the voice of the future.
In this project, the children of the three partner cities will identify the obstacles and advantages of active mobility. They will develop and design solutions as part of a design competition that will be exhibited to the public. The students will then supervise the implementation of an idea selected in collaboration with the main interested partners. The project also aims to increase awareness, ownership and involvement in the challenges and solutions of mobility, both for children but also within the general population ".

Gender Mobility: the SWARCO survey
SWARCO, TTS Italia founding member, believes in raising the visibility of women in the ITS sector, while improving diversity and inclusivity across all aspects of the mobility management. With regards to gender data gap in transport we understand this topic deserves a lot more attention and in-depth discussions. Even though the data is getting more and more conclusive, in practice there is still a lot to be done to ensure transport systems are inclusive and sustainable from all perspectives - this affects all areas, for example urban planning, policy, traffic management, new technologies and infrastructure.
SWARCO launched a short survey (3 minutes required) by 31 March 2022, in order to support bridging the above data gap and understand more about women’s needs in transportation.

IVECO takes a further step towards connected and autonomous driving with the ENSEMBLE project
As a member of the ENSEMBLE consortium, IVECO, TTS Italia ordinary member, participated in the development and use in real traffic conditions of a multi-brand platooning technology, agreed between all major truck manufacturers in Europe.
The 46-month project was co-funded by the European Union and demonstrated that platooning could play a key role in achieving sustainable transport and opening up towards multi-brand platooning and autonomous driving. improving fuel consumption, CO2 emissions, road safety and traffic efficiency.
The ENSEMBLE project, co-funded by the European Union and led by the Dutch independent research organization TNO, was launched in June 2018 with the aim of developing, testing and validating a secure multi-brand platooning technology, demonstrating its feasibility. of use in real traffic conditions and integrate C-ITS communication services. To achieve this, the consortium brought together the six largest truck manufacturers in Europe, the ERTICO ITS Europe organization (Intelligent Transportation System), the European Association of Automotive Suppliers and knowledge partners such as Gustav Eiffel University and Vrije Universiteit Brussel.
The project ended and the results were presented by the ENSEMBLE consortium at its latest public event, which took place in Brussels on March 17th. The project led to the development of a multi-brand technology agreed between the participating truck OEMs, which included the specification of a secure vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication protocol in order to ensure the correct behavior and response of every truck in the platoon in every traffic condition. This technology was successfully deployed in real-world traffic conditions on 23 September 2021 in Spain, in the Barcelona area, when seven trucks prepared by the participating manufacturers drove together in a fully coordinated platoon.
With the ENSEMBLE project, two platooning functions have also been defined: Platooning as Support Function (PSF), based on a tested technology and able to manage all situations in an existing traffic condition, Platooning as Autonomous Function (PAF), the intermediate step in the path towards a completely autonomous truck, which at the moment has been defined only in theoretical terms.
On the occasion of the event, Valerio Liga, IVECO's Advanced Engineering CCAM Project Manager, said: "With the ENSEMBLE project we have taken an important step forward on our path towards connected and autonomous driving. The fruitful collaboration between leading vehicle manufacturers, suppliers, research centers and universities in Europe has enabled us to demonstrate that multi-brand platooning can work under real conditions. However, the full potential of platooning can only be achieved when the human driver at the wheel of the following trucks is no longer required (or when their service hours can be extended) and the technology will be further developed to allow shorter distances between the vehicles. All this will result in better aerodynamics, lower fuel consumption and higher transport capacity (higher density of vehicles in the truck lane). This is the goal we want to achieve with Platooning as Autonomous Function (PAF). Finally, even if the functionality of platooning will not have a future in itself, the studies we have conducted and the technologies developed thanks to this project will be useful for fostering the development of connected and autonomous driving in Europe in the years to come ".

The bike is a cultural question: the interview with Nico Capogna, founder and CEO of Pin Bike
"The use of bicycles does not depend on possession, but it is a question of culture and habit. We need to enter into the daily logic of moving people and give them a good reason to rediscover this medium as ancient as it is modern ". The statement comes from Nico Capogna, founder, together with Davide Di Bisceglie, of the start-up Pin Bike (www.pinbike.it), TTS Italia ordinary member.
Pin Bike is the anti-fraud technological system (hardware and software) that allows a Municipality, a company or an educational institution to issue economic incentives to people who use their bicycles in their free time or for home-work and home-school routes.

The Mercury project: towards ever smarter roads
A lower rate on highway tolls for those who pollute less, or travel at times that don't clog the roads. An "intelligent" traffic light that does not block cars in moments of death. More electric charging stations and more green hydrogen and biomethane refueling systems, a more accurate monitoring of situations that can generate danger, to avoid congestion and prevent accidents. That is "Mercury", the Autostrade per l'Italia program that "owes its name to the god Mercury", explains CEO Roberto Tomasi, but also to "Project Mercury", the first US space program to include missions in space with crew.
A series of interventions and projects in part already started, in part to be started or to be completed, which within three / four years, Tomasi assures, will be completed and will produce effects on mobility and safety. For a cost that is difficult to quantify: around 200 million, and in any case all the investments are part of the large investment plan of 21.5 billion euros for the next ten years, 7 of which are destined for the maintenance of the motorway network, bridges, viaducts and galleries and 9.4 for new works. A plan that also includes 2,900 hires between now and 2024, which will be added to the more than 9,000 employees of the group.
To create Mercury, the energies and resources of the specialized companies of the Autostrade Group will be used, including Movyon, which studies solutions for innovative mobility and smart cities, and is TTS Italia founding member.
With an exchange system with urban centers, for which with "Urban Mobility", one of the five strands of "Mercury", the motorway system will integrate with the mobility of metropolitan areas through the booking and payment of the parking combined perhaps with the provision of services (the bicycle, the CEO of Autostrade hypothesized), and the optimization of traffic light control. Part of the projects is dedicated to the intelligent management of heavy vehicles, for the prevention of road accidents.
